This isn’t a story about a hero turning evil. It’s one of the most accurate portrayals of mental illness that I’ve seen in television. This isn’t a character betrayal as some have claimed. That’s when Daenerys became my favorite character in Game of Thrones. In “The Game Revealed” Miguel Sapochnik (Director of “The Bells”) says of Dany in that moment “She feels empty. Why would she burn the city when she had already won? As her armies overtook the city of King’s Landing, she sat upon Drogon…and made a choice. Her goal was within her grasp.īut then it happened. Why does someone need to resort to so much violence? I thought that what she was doing was right, but was going about it perhaps the wrong way. Some viewed her as a white knight and some viewed her as an entitled nobody who used rage and violence to get what she wanted. Some viewed her as a hero, while some viewed her as a conquerer. Episode 805, entitled “The Bells”, is the greatest achievement from the creators of Game of Thrones which fully delivered and gave Daenerys of House Targaryen the tragic and earned turning point that we were waiting for, but secretly hoped would never come.ĭany’s character has had a different effect on fans throughout the duration of the series. It’s a story about someone who couldn’t take it anymore. It’s a story about a young girl suffering from years of physical and mental abuse. A tragedy about the character nicknamed Khaleesi. While the story is not quite over, one moment from last week’s episode changed everything for me as a fan. I want to exit the series full of satisfaction with how our heroes and villains ended up. I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on this episode because, I too, am heavily invested in this story. “Betrayal” is one that I’ve seen used most to describe the treatment of one of the show’s most popular heroes, Daenerys Targaryen. There have been a lot of strong words used to describe last week’s episode of Game of Thrones. But it was the way it happened that shocked the world. “I will take what is mine with fire and blood.” *This is an opinion piece based on the show “Game of Thrones” and not necessarily the books the show was based on.*
